Matt Mattox to Depart ECU for North Texas, Adding to Offensive Staff Turnover

East Carolina is to see another significant piece of its offensive coaching staff move on, as offensive line coach Matt Mattox is reportedly heading to North Texas Mean Green.

Mattox’s departure would mark yet another change for the Pirates on the offensive side of the ball this offseason, as head coach Blake Harrell and new offensive coordinator Jordan Davis continue to reshape the staff following ECU’s nine-win 2025 campaign.

Mattox spent the past two seasons in Greenville, working closely with Davis during ECU’s dramatic offensive turnaround. After a 2–10 season in 2023, the Pirates became one of the most efficient offenses in the American Conference, finishing near the top nationally in total offense, passing offense, and third-down efficiency over the last two seasons.

His move to Denton would reunite him with Davis’ former program, as North Texas went 12–2 this past season while averaging more than 45 points per game and over 500 yards of offense.

Mattox’s exit adds to a growing list of offensive coaching changes for ECU this offseason. Wide receivers coach Dyrell Roberts recently left for the same position at Wake Forest Demon Deacons, while running backs coach Rodney Freeman II accepted the same role at Duke Blue Devils.

To help stabilize the unit, Davis is bringing former North Texas assistant Juan Soto with him to Greenville to coach the wide receivers. Soto worked alongside Davis with the Mean Green and helped oversee one of the most productive receiving rooms in the country last season.

With Mattox moving on, ECU will now have at least one more key offensive vacancy to fill as bowl preparations transition into full offseason planning. How quickly Harrell and Davis can solidify the offensive staff will be one of the more important storylines to watch as the Pirates look to build on their momentum heading into 2026.
