East Carolina has added a significant piece to its quarterback room through the transfer portal.
Former Emory Williams has officially signed with the East Carolina Pirates, according to reports from Chris Hummer and Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports. Williams arrives in Greenville after spending the past three seasons with the Miami Hurricanes, where he served as a backup during the last two years.
Williams was behind Carson Beck on the depth chart during the 2025 season, and previously backed up Cam Ward in 2024. He entered the transfer portal following Miami’s postseason loss to Indiana earlier this week, taking advantage of the extended window available to teams that competed in the College Football Playoff.
Now a redshirt sophomore, Williams brings two years of eligibility with him to ECU. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound quarterback appeared in 12 games during his time in Coral Gables, completing 73-of-116 passes for 813 yards and four touchdowns, while throwing just two interceptions. His most notable stretch came as a true freshman in 2023, when he made two starts — including a home win over Clemson — before an arm injury ended his season late in the year.
Williams had been linked to East Carolina for several weeks, but elected to wait until Miami’s season officially concluded before finalizing his decision. With the portal closing on Jan. 16 for CFP participants, Williams made his move just before the deadline.
At ECU, Williams will compete for the starting job alongside Texas Tech transfer Mitch Griffis, giving the Pirates two experienced, Power Five-tested options at quarterback heading into the offseason.
