Pirates Land Division II Standout Closer Gavin Marley
East Carolina continues to add key pieces to its 2026 pitching staff, this time securing a commitment from one of Division II baseball’s top bullpen arms. On Thursday, Gavin Marley, a hard-throwing right-hander from Lenoir-Rhyne, announced his decision to transfer to ECU.
Marley, a native of Hickory, N.C., and product of St. Stephens High School, made his decision after taking visits to both ECU and NC State earlier in the week. In the end, he chose to join the Pirates, giving the program another experienced, high-leverage option at the back end of the bullpen.
After redshirting in 2022, Marley steadily developed before breaking out in 2025 for Lenoir-Rhyne. He finished the season with a 3-1 record, 2.75 ERA, and a team-best 10 saves, striking out 59 batters in 39.1 innings. Opposing hitters batted just .167 against him, and he allowed only 22 hits while issuing 22 walks. His combination of velocity and command made him one of the most effective closers at the DII level last season.
Marley is currently playing summer ball with the Asheboro Zookeepers as he prepares for the jump to Division I. He becomes the latest portal pickup for Cliff Godwin and his staff, joining Liberty transfer Joseph Webb and Belmont Abbey closer Thomas Paxton as incoming arms looking to impact the 2026 bullpen.
With several key innings up for grabs heading into next season, Marley’s arrival provides a proven option with closing experience one who’s already shown he can thrive in big moments.
