All-Region EDGE Zyon Ratchford Commits to ECU, Becomes Second Gaffney Prospect in 2026 Class

East Carolina continues to stack defensive talent in its 2026 recruiting class and the latest addition comes from one of South Carolina’s top programs.

Zyon Ratchford, a long and athletic defender from Gaffney High School (S.C.), has committed to ECU following his official visit to Greenville in mid-June. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound junior chose the Pirates over fellow finalists Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina, both of which hosted him on officials. He also considered South Florida and held offers from Charlotte and multiple FCS programs.

Ratchford was extended a formal offer by ECU on May 22, but the staff had been on him since the fall of 2023. He becomes the second Gaffney product to join ECU’s 2026 class, following defensive tackle Kelton Smith both of whom visited campus the weekend of June 12–14.

A reigning All-Region selection, Ratchford primarily plays inside linebacker for Gaffney but is projected to move to the edge in college. His length, motor, and closing speed make him a strong fit as a stand-up outside linebacker in East Carolina’s defensive system. He finished his junior season with 68 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and four sacks, while also excelling as a two-sport athlete on the basketball court.

Ratchford was recruited heavily by outside linebackers coach Rico Zackery, with support from defensive coordinator Josh Aldridge and multiple staff members across the program. His character and academic profile stood out during the process as well he holds a reported GPA above 4.0.

With his commitment, ECU now holds 12 total pledges in the 2026 class, including several key defenders like Chad Fairchild, Jeremiah Roux, DJ McLendon, and David Coleman Jr.

Ratchford brings burst, versatility, and upside to the Pirates’ future front seven — and becomes another foundational piece for a class built around length, speed, and physicality.
