ECU Lands Elite Speedster Jeff Sabater from DII Ranks
East Carolina’s 2026 roster continues to take shape through the transfer portal, and the latest addition brings elite speed and top-of-the-order potential to the outfield. Jeff Sabater, a standout from Division II power Millersville University, has committed to the Pirates as a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility remaining.
Standing 5-foot-10, 165 pounds, Sabater was one of the most dangerous base stealers and on-base threats in the country over the past two seasons. He swiped 96 bases across that span, including an eye-popping 57 steals in 2024 alone. His junior campaign in 2025 saw him slash .363/.491/.467, drawing 39 walks and seven hit-by-pitches against just 26 strikeouts while serving as Millersville’s everyday leadoff hitter and centerfielder.
A left-handed bat, Sabater also shined during summer ball in 2024, starring in the Cal Ripken League with the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts. He batted .381 with a 1.036 OPS, recording 26 walks, just 15 strikeouts, and 21 stolen bases in 25 attempts across 24 games. He also added seven doubles and a triple to round out a dynamic offensive profile.
Sabater is expected to immediately compete for the starting centerfield job, which is now vacant following the graduation of Ryley Johnson. While Braden Burress and Alex Peltier both spent time in centerfield last season, Burress appears likely to shift back to the infield, potentially at second base. Peltier, who hit .211 with six doubles, two home runs, and nine stolen bases as a freshman, remains an option in the outfield rotation.
With Sabater’s addition, ECU not only gains a proven top-of-the-order threat but also fills a critical defensive role up the middle. His speed, contact ability, and mature approach at the plate give the Pirates another weapon as they gear up for a 2026 campaign loaded with expectation.
